Not exactly an overnight success, Irish five-piece O Emperor had been plugging away on their local Waterford circuit for almost a decade before the big boys at Universal came a-knocking after hearing the original version of their debut album, Hither Thither. Capitalizing on the opportunity to build on their already expansive sound, the childhood friends have since re-recorded the tracks that also appeared on their Persephone and Reverie EPs, as well as writing several new songs, a move which distances them even further from their humble covers band beginnings. Indeed, while their early repertoire of Beatles and Pink Floyd classics occasionally reveal their influence on the brooding piano balladry of "Sedalia" and the trippy atmospherics of "To the Sea," the majority of its 11 tracks have more in common with the alt-country of the '70s Laurel Canyon scene and the more sophisticated Brit-pop of the '90s than the psychedelic '60s pop/rock of their idols. "Heisenberg" is a woozy fusion of Beach Boys harmonies, celestial melodies, and mournful horns which recall the dreamy folk of Grizzly Bear and Midlake; "Taloned Air" starts out as an ethereal slice of '70s-tinged Americana before exploding into a feedback-drenched My Bloody Valentine-esque shoegazing instrumental, while "Po" is a jangly, guitar-led tale of an obsolete imaginary friend which showcases frontman Paul Savage's impressive falsetto vocals. The band is just as convincing when inspired by material more closer to home, as on the Pulp-like "Don't Mind Me," whose infectious whistling, slide guitar solos, and breezy chorus provide the album's poppiest moment; the delicate nu-folk melodies of "Catch 22," which could give Mumford & Sons a run for their money, and the Muse-ish operatic rock of the album's bookends, "Don Quixote" and "The Fat Lady Sings," although the sprawling post-rock of "December" veers a little too closely to Radiohead pastiche territory for comfort. The band's decision to rework their slim back catalog could quite easily have backfired on them, but having cleverly avoided drifting into self-indulgence, Hither Thither is a pretty enthralling debut which suggests the extra spit and polish was definitely worth it.
