Persa nello strascichio del High School Musical, l'evento fenomenale è che la sensazione degli adolescenti è in realtà un musical con canzoni che servono alla trama e sono cantate a rotazione dal cast. Ciò contribuisce a far lavorare l'industria cinematografica, ma condanna le colonne sonore ad essere semplici ricordi dell'evento. Su HSM3, figurano soltanto due canzoni che si distinguono come potenziali soggetti singoli del pop, ambedue vetrine dell'assolo per le due maggiori star del franchise, Vanessa Hudgens e Zac Efron. Hudgens ha la migliore canzone dell'album nella ben espressiva "Walk Away", mentre Efron procede impettita come NSYNC su "Scream". Entrambe sono messe in secondo piano dalla monella del palcoscenico Ashley Tisdale, che mostra mai come prima d'ora il carisma sulla vetrina avida di notorietà "I Want It All."
