Conosciuti per i loro slalom stilistici, i jazzisti Kamasi Washington e Robert Glasper, il polistrumentista / produttore Terrace Martin e il beatmaker rap Patrick Douthit – aka 9th Wonder – hanno unito le loro menti in un supergruppo, i Dinner Party, il cui omonimo album di debutto è stato registrato ai Chalice Studios di Los Angeles alla fine del 2019. Con la voce di Phoelix su quattro brani, questi quattro musicisti che si conoscono quasi fin dal liceo, hanno creato un soul contemporaneo, visceralmente dolce e molto chill. Una colonna sonora di stampo soul anni ’90, senza pretese, che si basa più sulla creazione degli ambienti sonori che sugli eccessivi tecnicismi di ciascuno. Ritmi soft, tastiere cinematografiche, fiati e chitarre sensuali soffici come mousse, mentre la voce di Phoelix – anch’essa vellutata al 100% – arrichisce le composizioni con testi impegnati. Come su Freeze Tag, dove affronta in modo diretto la violenza della polizia: They told me put my hands up behind my head… I think they got the wrong one, I’m sick and tired of runnin’n’, I’m sick and tired of runnin’. In definitiva, questo Dinner Party è una sorta di fusione musicale di jazz e soul, appoggiata su solidi ritmi hip-hop, che forse non sarà la più originale, ma grazie alla sua realizzazione perfettamente calibrata ci permette di trascorrere una ventina di minuti piacevoli come un bagno rilassante.
