Dopo una lunga parentesi politica, Wyclef Jean era tornato alla musica, nel febbraio 2017, con l’album intitolato J’ouvert, dal nome della grande festa di strada della cultura caraibica che si svolge durante il carnevale. Una buona decisione quella dell’ex Fugees che, a 47 anni, conosce dunque le conseguenze di un impegno politico totale, come canta nella nuova versione di If I Was President: «Se fossi presidente, sarei eletto il venerdì, assassinato il sabato, sepolto la domenica e tutti tornerebbero al lavoro il lunedì…». J’ouvert mostrava soprattutto un autore sempre così ispirato nei suoi accostamenti tra rap, reggae, folk, soul e musica caraibica, un artista a suo agio anche quando si confronta con i più giovani (come Young Thug) o rivisita un classico di Jacques Brel come Ne me quitte pas. Nemmeno digerite queste dieci tracce che Wyclef mette altra carne al fuoco, a distanza di soli sette mesi, con Carnival III: The Fall And Rise Of A Refugee, un vero album stavolta, e soprattutto una nuova ode a tutti i suoi valori musicali: la scoperta, la diversità, il concetto di arte ecc. Il cocktail dell’ex Fugees si rivela sempre così gustoso e la sua mescolanza stilistica sempre così riuscita. Da notare i featuring con Emeli Sandé (Carry On), Lunchmoney Lewis (What Happened To Love) e l’ex star del new jack swing, Teddy Riley (Trapicabana). © CM/Qobuz
