Brooklyn drill rapper Sleepy Hallow takes his sound to unexpected new places on his second studio album Boy Meets World, toying almost playfully with genre and production while delving deeper into lyrics that are often personal and introspective. While the intensity of Brooklyn drill still comes through in the bass-heavy production and Sleepy Hallow's blunt, powerful flows, the beats incorporate interesting flips of R&B samples, rhythmic programming that's minimal yet complex, and a melodic sensibility that makes even the album's darkest moments catchy. "Anxiety" is based around a nocturnal soul hook, making room for Sleepy Hallow and featured guest Doechii to wind in slithering verses about paranoia and mental anguish. Tracks like "Pain Talk" (featuring Lil Tjay) and "Good Girls Ain't No Fun" achieve a unique balance of heavy tension and pop structure, making for some of the more captivating drill production in an ocean of sound-alikes. Sleepy Hallow branches out into even more adventurous territory as Boy Meets World goes on, bringing EDM producer Marshmello in to glitch out the beat on "CBG," mangling an emo-pop foundation on "Die Young," and venturing into almost comically accurate '90s rave atmospheres on the surreal neon techno of "Perky Man." This willingness to go to weird and unexpected places, combined with raw talent, makes for something that transcends the often-limiting trappings of rap subcategorization.
