Nati nell’Ohio nel 1999, i National sono formati da Matt Berninger e dai fratelli Dessner e Devendorf. Nel 2007, il gruppo pubblicava il suo quarto album, nonché uno dei più importanti della sua carriera: Boxer. Undici anni dopo, rende omaggio a quel disco con questo live registrato a Bruxelles in cui interpreta la totalità dei brani in esso contenuti. In origine, il live avrebbe dovuto uscire solo sotto forma di vinile per il Record Store Day. Ma su grande richiesta, i National hanno scelto di pubblicarlo anche in versione ufficiale. Fedele alla prima versione, il gruppo ha conservato più o meno la stessa immagine per la copertina, una foto di loro mentre suonano al matrimonio del produttore Peter Katis. Il quintetto ci regala qui una performance perfetta dalla A alla Z davanti a un pubblico reattivo e caloroso. Il disco si apre su Fake Empire, una piccola prodezza musicale di cui non si può che amare quel suo aspetto destrutturato, soprattutto nell’uso delle tastiere pop che suonano in controtempo rispetto alla voce di Berninger. L’alchimia è flagrante in Brainy, dove chitarre, bassi e batteria si armonizzano perfettamente in una sorta di tenzone musicale. Fino all’ultima canzone, Gospel, si opera una specie di incantesimo, soprattutto per via del contrasto di quella voce grave che canta su una melodia intensa e leggera. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz
