In a world whose pace often feels recklessly relentless, small moments and gratitude practices offer a welcome sigh of relief: the endearing twinkle of a setting sun through scattered fire escapes, the soft eye contact sustained when speaking your truth; this sentimental and visceral exuberance seeps out of the Austin-based Hovvdy's fourth studio record True Love. Starting as a DIY-recording project, Charlie Martin and Will Taylor's early releases were hazy gems reminiscent of the dusted indie-textures of Pavement and Yo La Tengo with the hook-filled melodic sensibilities of early 2000s Coldplay. Created with genre-fusing producer Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Bon Iver, Nick Hakim), True Love honors Hovvdy's genuine spirit and sharpens the duo's storytelling with rich, vivid musical soundscapes.
True Love builds radiant portraits of daily life and the relationships that fill them. “It's about resiliency and appreciating the little moments," Martin says. "Even in somber moments, the joy behind the music is noticeable." Opener "Sometimes" introduces a rollicking acoustic guitar and Martin's soft voice recounting intimate memories when a glitchy dial-tone sketches the pang of distance via a disconnected phone conversation. The album's title track is a triumphant declaration of joy and unconditional admiration. From its boisterous melodies to a music video with the duo circling under a billowing rainbow parachute (remember the one from elementary school gym class?), a current of sincerity shimmers throughout. "Hope" fully showcases the duo's sonic experimentation—cycling synthesizers and scratchy instrumentals float through looping auto-tuned-soaked vocals capturing the chaos of a troubled relationship and the efforts to reconcile it. "Do you misunderstand what it looks like/On my side/ Hope I'm not wrong," sings Martin. True Love offers an incisive, heart-tugging, and firmly feel-good meditation on the price we pay for connection and the ultimate satisfaction that loving can bring with a whole heart. A fitting record for the times. © William Card/Qobuz
