Cela commence très fort : « It’s time for cocaine brunch! », lance Donald Cumming dès les premières mesures de « She’s So Expensive ». La tête pensante des Virgins est à la fois chanteur, guitariste, auteur et compositeur. Et doté d’un charisme ravageur, qui transperce même à l’écoute de ce premier album.
Un album remarquable, d’ailleurs, simple et efficace. Dix chansons à la structure classique et qui, excepté « Fernando Pando », ne dépassent qu’à peine les trois minutes. Des chœurs décalés, tombant facilement dans l’imitation des voix pop haut perchées, de l’humour et une gouaille irrésistible. Et surtout un rock aux guitares forcément électriques, à la basse d’obédience Motown et à la batterie rigoureuse. Les inspirations sont aussi là, exploitées avec doigté.
Outre le fait que ces quatre garçons soient tous des inconditionnels de David Bowie, on reconnaît les influences de leurs prédécesseurs new-yorkais, comme The Strokes ou The Rapture, mais aussi – et surtout – The Velvet Underground, The Ramones, Talking Heads et autre Modern Lovers.
On s’amuse ainsi beaucoup, tout en étant intrigué par cette apparente facilité. Apparente seulement, car, cerise sur le gâteau, un « Love Is Colder Than Death » clôt l’album en séduisant sans réserve. Son curieux mélange de groove langoureux (conféré par l’emploi des cuivres) et d’angoisse (distillée par la basse) confirme le talent de ces Virgins pas si virginaux et innocents que cela.
