« Le choix des chanteurs distingue cette Fairy Queen redisposée en quatre volets par Peter Pears et Benjamin Britten pour le Festival d'Aldeburgh 1967. L'enregistrement date, lui, de 1970, avec le confort de l'English Chamber Orchestra, dont Leppard était familier. On y sent ce qui relie le monde musical de Britten à celui de Purcell, mais on songe plus d'une fois à la pompe de Gloriana : le geste est celui de la célébration, avec un Ambrosian Opera Chorus éclatant. Ce grand ton favorise moins les moments de comédie qu'un lyrisme soutenu par la crème du chant anglais d'alors : James Bowman encore, Norma Burrowes, Alfreda Hodgson, Ian Partridge, John Shirley-Quirk, à l'ombre tutélaire de Jennifer Vyvyan [...] En complément, Eloquence a déniché un disque rare (1957) du chef pionnier Anthony Lewis. Sa sélection de pièces de Purcell pour le théâtre est une bénédiction, tant l'esprit y règne avec la musicalité, capable d'allier la souplesse du phrasé, la vie jaillissante et la distinction. Et qui plus est, avec deux maîtres : la basse Hervey Alan et bien sûr Jennifer Vyvyan [...]. Quarante minutes de délices. « Le choix des chanteurs distingue cette Fairy Queen redisposée en quatre volets par Peter Pears et Benjamin Britten pour le Festival d'Aldeburgh 1967. L'enregistrement date, lui, de 1970, avec le confort de l'English Chamber Orchestra, dont Leppard était familier. On y sent ce qui relie le monde musical de Britten à celui de Purcell, mais on songe plus d'une fois à la pompe de Gloriana : le geste est celui de la célébration, avec un Ambrosian Opera Chorus éclatant. Ce grand ton favorise moins les moments de comédie qu'un lyrisme soutenu par la crème du chant anglais d'alors : James Bowman encore, Norma Burrowes, Alfreda Hodgson, Ian Partridge, John Shirley-Quirk, à l'ombre tutélaire de Jennifer Vyvyan [...] En complément, Eloquence a déniché un disque rare (1957) du chef pionnier Anthony Lewis. Sa sélection de pièces de Purcell pour le théâtre est une bénédiction, tant l'esprit y règne avec la musicalité, capable d'allier la souplesse du phrasé, la vie jaillissante et la distinction. Et qui plus est, avec deux maîtres : la basse Hervey Alan et bien sûr Jennifer Vyvyan [...]. Quarante minutes de délices.
