Les Decemberists continuent leur percée dans une scène folk américaine sage taillée pour les ondes, comme en témoigne le premier titre Once in My Life. Les pistes longues, les envolées instrumentales et les accents celtiques que pouvaient exhaler The Crane Wise (2006) sont loin, le folk terreux qui caractérisait la bande de Portland s’effaçant déjà au fil des albums jusqu’au moderne What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World. I’ll Be Your Girl les voit poursuivre leur mue.
