Encastrer le froid dans le chaud (à moins que ça ne soit l’inverse), Gang of Four sait faire. Dans la grisaille nordiste de Leeds, le chanteur Jon King, le guitariste Andy Gill, le bassiste Dave Allen et le batteur Hugo Burnham lancent leur révolution post-punk à coups des guitares désarticulées et de grooves anguleux. Entertainment !, leur premier album publié en septembre 1979, impose la singularité de ce yin et yang climatique. Très très frisquet donc dans des mélodies que la six-cordes de Gill cisaille à coups de stridences et de laminages. Mais très très chaud dans une rythmique élastique et funky comme chez les Talking Heads d’alors. Le carambolage est d’autant plus violent que les textes de cet Entertainment! ne sont pas vraiment de l’entertainment mais plutôt des petits cocktails Molotov à base de situationnisme, de féminisme, d’aliénation, de conflit nord-irlandais, de guérilla maoïste en Amérique du Sud et de plein d’autres festives considérations… Avec leurs confrères de The Fall, Père Ubu, Au Pairs ou PIL, Gang of Four ébranle les harmonies, les refrains, les solos et les mélodies comme nul autre. Un radicalisme qui influencera des années plus tard des groupes comme The Rapture, Radio 4, Editors, Bloc Party ou Franz Ferdinand… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
