Pianist, singer, bassoonist, music historian, David Munrow is a kind of meteor that has crossed the musical world bringing a new perspective on the interpretation of early music. His unfortunately depressive disposition led him to hang himself at the age of thirty-four, apparently following the consecutive deaths of his father and father-in-law, tragically depriving the rediscovery of early music by one of its finest ambassadors: an absolutely irreparable loss.

Despite his untimely death, David Munrow had time to make a series of remarkable recordings with his Early Music Consort of London ensemble: they have shaped their era, especially those devoted to the School of Notre Dame, the music of the Gothic Era, Praetorius and Guillaume Dufay, particularly the present version of his Missa “Se la face ay pale,” made in London in September 1973.

More than fifty years after its publication, this recording has retained its power to fascinate thanks to a kind of genius intuition that was able to give rhythm, sensitivity and a previously unknown expression to a masterpiece by a composer more than four centuries old. On this occasion, Munrow chose an all-male ensemble (countertenors, tenors, baritones) and the understated support of a few instruments to give an interpretative hypothesis which is still relevant today. © François Hudry/Qobuz
