Recorded in public concert on September 25 and 26, 2014, this Missa Solemnis under the direction of the venerable old lion that is Bernard Haitink shows him to be profoundly contemplative, but also capable of unleashing the orchestral fury of the magnificent Bavarian Radio Orchestra. It would be a shame not to be tempted by this quasi musical testament of one of the most important musicians of the 20th and early 21st centuries that Bernard Haitink always was and still is, especially in a work as difficult to access and apprehend as Beethoven's "Missa Solemnis", which so many conductors have conducted the score instead of conducting the music. Indispensable in your discotheque.
