Giuseppe Sabbatini

Tenor Giuseppe Sabbatini became a well-known figure in the principal opera houses of Italy during the 1990s. He began his musical career as a contra-bass player, then began studying voice. In the late 1980s, he attracted national attention winning Italian vocal prizes, including the A. Belli Competition of Spoleto, the Abbiati Prize for vocal interpretation (1991) and the Schipa d'Oro (1996). He made his professional debut as Edgar in Lucia di Lammermoor. Soon after the Spoleto prize, he began appearing at major Italian opera houses including Teatro alla Scala of Milan, the Rome Opera, Teatro Regio of Turin, Teatro San Carlo of Naples, and the main houses of Parma, Bologna, and Firenze. Internationally, he has appeared at the Opéra-Bastille of Paris, Covent Garden in London, the Chicago Lyric Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Liceu of Barcelona, and the Japan Opera Foundation. He sings the leading tenor parts of La Bohème, Manon and Werther of Massenet, Rigoletto, Gounod's Faust, Evgeni Onegin, The Tales of Hoffman, the Peal Fishers, Anna Bolena, Falstaff, Thaïs, Robert Devereux, Fra Diavolo, and Roméo et Juliette. At La Scala he has also sung Idomeneo, La Traviata, and Linda di Chamounix. In addition, he sings widely as a concert artist in such works as Berlioz's Damnation of Faust, The Prisoner by Dallapiccola, Rossini's Stabat Mater and Messe Solennelle, and Donizetti's Requiem. He has recorded the operatic roles of Gabriele Adorno in a recording of Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, and Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni, and the Rossini Mass conducted by Riccardo Chailly, as well as a disc of opera arias.
