KammerChor Saarbrücken

The KammerChor Saarbrücken is considered one of Germany's top small choral groups. The choir has a substantial recording catalog on Carus and other German labels. The KammerChor Saarbrücken ("Saarbrücken Chamber Choir") was founded in 1990 by Georg Grün, a conductor trained at several music schools in Saarbrücken in western Germany. He remained the group's conductor and artistic director as of the early 2020s. The group has about 40 singers. The KammerChor Saarbrücken earned recognition early for its homogeneous and transparent sound in a cappella music. A major early breakthrough was the choir's victory in the 1998 Deutschen Chorwettbewerb ("German Choral Competition"), and it went on to take prizes in various domestic and international choral competitions over the following decades, including the 13th International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany, in 2013. In 2000, the KammerChor Saarbrücken released its debut album on the Christophorus label, featuring the Johannes-Passion and motets by Renaissance composer Christoph Demantius. In 2005, the group moved to the Carus label for an album of choral arrangements by 20th century composer Clytus Gottwald. The KammerChor Saarbrücken has a large repertory stretching from the Renaissance to contemporary times. It has appeared a cappella, with traditional orchestras (it has a long relationship with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern), and with historically oriented ensembles devoted to Baroque music. The group often appears on the Saarlander Rundfunk radio station. The choir began to be invited to international events in the late 2010s, including the 11th World Symposium on Choral Music in Barcelona, Spain, in 2017 and the 50th anniversary of the Tolosa International Choir Competition in 2018. In 2019, the group mounted a tour of Asia. The KammerChor Saarbrücken moved to the Rondeau label in 2016 for the album Ultimum: New A Cappella Music and then released the album Ko Matsushita: Consolatio - Contemporary Choral Music on Carus in 2019.
