Peut-être pas évident de prime abord, Only God Was Above Us se dévoile au fil des écoutes, pour se révéler addictif et grandiose. La tête pensante de Vampire Weekend, Ezra Koenig, en parle d’ailleurs comme leur “disque le plus ambitieux à ce jour”. Mais a-t-il déjà vraiment manqué d'audace ? En 2008, le premier disque des New-Yorkais opérait un mix savant entre indie pop locale et influences venues d’ailleurs, qu'ils qualifiaient d’“Upper West Side Soweto”. Deux ans plus tard, suivait le pimpant Contra (2010) porté par les beats à quatre temps d’Horchata ou ce Diplomat’s Son qui reprenait avec brio Toots and the Maytals et M.I.A.. Le plus pop Modern Vampires Of The City, puis le folk-americana Father Of The Bride, pour lequel il a bougé de New-York à Los Angeles et de XL Recording chez Columbia, opéraient sans doute des passages plus tranquilles, peut-être moins fous et plus linéaires, dont il a eu besoin de se détacher.
OGWAU ose tout. C'est un patchwork fluide de genres, qui maîtrise les enchaînements, découpe les rythmes, sur des textes toujours engagés. Pour lui, Ezra Koenig a jeté son dévolu sur le piano. On le retrouve quasiment partout, de cet Ice Cream Piano d’ouverture à la lumineuse ballade Hope, en clôture. Il accompagne de grandes orchestrations mélodiques, est adossé à de très légères guitares (Pravda), se fait ruisselant ou baroque (Connect), est chassé par des violons et des saxophones (Classical), évoque les bizarreries de Grimes sur Gen-X Cops, ou réhausse les nappes contemplatives du trip minimaliste The Surfer. Dans ce flot de textures mouvantes, Mary Boone parvient même à jongler entre le Graceland de Paul Simon, des chœurs féminins d’église et des digressions dignes d’Animal Collective période Merriweather Post Pavilion.
