"Notre-Dame" évoque immédiatement le nom de Quasimodo et l'univers du Bossu de Notre-Dame, nouvelle dans laquelle Victor Hugo dresse un portrait du Paris du dix-neuvième siècle, avec la Cathédrale Notre-Dame comme personnage principal. L'opéra de Franz Schmidt est dominé par le personnage d'Esmeralda, centre d'attention de quatre personnages masculins : Phoebus, Gringoire, L'Archidiacre, et Quasimodo. Par ses effets dévastateurs sur les hommes, Esmaralda rappelle Lulu, femme-enfant innocente et destructrice, 30 ans avant l'opéra éponyme d'Alban Berg.
