Le multi-instrumentiste et compositeur d’origine morave Gottfried Finger est souvent cantonné aux notes de bas de page des histoires de la musique contemporaines, mais de son vivant, peu de compositeurs pouvaient se targuer d’une carrière aussi accomplie et riche d’autant de « premières » que lui. Finger fut le premier à publier des sonates solo en Angleterre, à composer un concerto en Angleterre, à laisser une série complète de pièces pour percussions turques en Europe, à organiser la représentation d’un opéra anglais sur le continent et fut un membre actif de la vie des concerts publics à Londres, et à la fin de sa vie, il fut le premier Konzertmeister du célèbre orchestre de la cour de Mannheim.
Au cours de sa carrière variée et active sur plus d’un demi-siècle, il croisa également le chemin de quelques-uns des plus grands compositeurs de son temps (notamment Biber, Purcell, Telemann, Sigmund Leopold Weiss et peut-être François Couperin). Cet album présente douze pièces écrites dans la seconde moitié de sa carrière – toutes enregistrées ici pour la première fois – qui témoignent de l’ampleur étonnante de sa production et de son habileté à manier des sonorités instrumentales chatoyantes. © Ramée
