Amante dei sigari, che fuma con piacere, assaporando ogni momento con una disinvoltura epicurea completa che è diventata il suo modus vivendi. Nato da una famiglia di amanti della musica, Paul Van Nevel (4 febbraio 1946), esplora la polifonia europea dal Medioevo al Rinascimento, con particolare attenzione al repertorio dimenticato della polifonia franco-fiamminga (Nicolas Gombert, Antoine Brumel, Cipriano de Rore), dopo aver interpretato, ovviamente, molta musica contemporanea all'inizio della sua attività con la Huelgas Ensemble, che ha fondato nel 1971. Con essa ha registrato numerosi album negli ultimi anni per Harmonia Mundi e per la ECM, mentre attualmente lavora per la Deutsche Harmonia Mundi con progetti emozionanti come sempre (lo splendido album «Le mystère de 'Malheur me bate’», per esempio), e una rara sontuosità sonora. Una discografia davvero geniale!
