Non c'è niente di meglio, di più gioioso, stimolante o commovente di Mavis Staples. Fin dal suo debutto durante l'adolescenza con la sua band di famiglia The Staples Singers, la sua voce ha evocato una profonda emozione nei suoi ascoltatori. Lo si può percepire nelle canzoni che hanno segnato il movimento per i diritti civili degli anni '60 (le preferite di Martin Luther King!), tra cui "Long Walk to D.C." e "When Will We Be Paid". Lo si può sentire anche nelle sue canzoni di successo, come "Let's Do It Again" e l'impeccabile "I'll Take You There". Il lavoro solista di Mavis Staples è passato in sordina per troppo tempo, ma canzoni come "Crying in the Chapel" sono diventate intramontabili. È stata invitata da una lunga serie di artisti per delle collaborazioni prestigiose: da Prince ("Melody Cool") al suo vecchio amico Bob Dylan ("Gonna Change My Way of Thinking"), Run the Jewels, Norah Jones, Arcade Fire, Los Lobos e Gorillaz, senza dimenticare Ben Harper e Mr. Ward alla produzione. Ma nessuna relazione si è dimostrata più fruttuosa di quella che condivide con Jeff Tweedy dei Wilco, che ha scritto canzoni per lei e prodotto gli album If All I Was Black e You Are Not Alone. Gli album sono eccellenti, ma è abbastanza difficile sbagliare con Mavis Staples. Ecco un omaggio alle sue migliori canzoni.
