La carriera musicale di Mark Lanegan, iniziata nel 1984 con gli Screaming Trees, è tanto lunga quanto è profonda la sua voce. Questo baritono si è fatto un nome non solo grazie alla sua voce cavernosa poggiata su chitarre cupe e distorte, ma anche grazie alle sue numerose collaborazioni. Nel 1990 pubblica il suo primo album da solista: sente il desiderio di un'altra musica, meno cruda e più intima. Ne seguiranno altri dieci. Ma la sua storia è caratterizzata anche dal duo vincente con Isobel Campbell, con cui ha registrato tre album tra il 2004 e il 2011; dalle sue partecipazioni, con chitarra e voce, sugli album "Rated R" e "Songs for the Deaf" dei Queens Of The Stone Age, per i quali ha scritto con Josh Homme l'indimenticabile "No One Knows". Ma anche The Gutter Twins con Greg Dulli, il cantante degli Afghan Whigs, o la sua partecipazione vocale su diversi brani del duo Soulsavers, tra elettronica downtempo e rock.
Ora è tornato con il suo 12° album da solista, "Straight Songs of Sorrow". Caratterizzato come sempre dalla sua carismatica voce baritonale, questo ultimo lavoro è, per la prima volta, interamente autobiografico. Quindici canzoni ispirate alla sua storia personale e tutt'uno con il suo libro di memorie, "Sing Backwards and Weep", pubblicato contemporaneamente.
