Il lavoro di Copland è molto vario, insieme a composizioni molto popolari (Rodeo, Appalachian Spring, Symphony No. 3), capolavori molto meno popolari convivono nella stessa linea, The Tender Land (opera sulla vita rurale americana, da cui Copland ha estratto una suite per concerto) o Quiet City (una sorta di poema sinfonico moderno e urbano di una poesia eccezionale). Ma accanto a questo Copland "popolare" e profondamente lirico, c'è quello moderna, che ha ripreso i paesaggi rocciosi e aridi delle grandi estensioni americane. Le sconcertanti "Connotations", gli strani "Inscape" , dinamici "Orchestral Variations", "Piano Fantasy" sono ancora oggi colonne sonore con ampie ramificazioni, che non sono facili al primo ascolto, dove le "Old American Songs" sono, ormai, scomparse.
