Caballé ha trentatré anni quando incide questa mitica versione, al fianco di un radioso Carlo Bergonzi e di uno Sherrill Milnes agl’inizi. La morbidezza del timbro, il modo in cui incarna il personaggio, le sublimi messe di voce (L’Addio del passato [disco 2, traccia 11 della vostra playlist su Qobuz]), senza i tagli abituali, sono così belli che viene da piangere. Con la giovane Caballé, l’emozione nasce dall’afflato e dalla semplicità della linea ereditata dalla tradizione belcantistica. Ma la sua lunga carriera ci riserva ben altre sorprese. Nata in un ambiente modestissimo e molto religioso di Barcellona (il suo nome viene dalla famosa Vergine Nera di Montserrat, patrona della Catalogna), viene subito notata nel Conservatorio della città, dove la sua precocità stupisce ed incanta. È a Basilea, dove funge da sostituta per due lunghe stagioni in attesa del suo momento, che s’impone da un giorno all’altro, rimpiazzando una collega indisposta. Il seguito è noto. Caballé inanella i successi e i ruoli più disparati. Nel 1965, la sua Lucrezia Borgia donizettiana dà fuoco alle polveri alla Carnegie Hall di New York, quando sostituisce all’improvviso la grande Marilyn Horne. Grazie alla prudenza e all’eccezionale tecnica vocale, Montserrat Caballé canta su tutti i grandi palchi del mondo, incarnando principesse e regine con un successo mai smentito. Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Spontini, Verdi, Puccini, ma anche Mozart, Gounod e Massenet sono i suoi compositori prediletti, e vanno a ruba nel mondo intero. Alla fine della carriera, farà persino un’incursione nel repertorio wagneriano. In un momento in cui la moda cominciava a cercare cantatrici svelte, disincarnate, che avessero l’età del loro personaggio, il suo fisico imponente avrebbe potuto relegarla lontano dalla scena, non fosse stato per la sua presenza vocale che s’imponeva a tutti. La sua carriera discografica è immensa e copre la totalità del suo repertorio. Poiché la voce iniziava a trasformarsi, ai primi degli anni Ottanta, Montserrat Caballé ha accentuato il lato drammatico e teatrale dei personaggi e diversificato il repertorio, confrontandosi senza esitazioni con il crossover, specialmente con Freddie Mercury. Anche sul palcoscenico si è divertita molto, rivestendo i panni di un’esilarante Madama Cortese nel Viaggio a Reims di Rossini sotto la direzione di Claudio Abbado, una produzione del Festival di Pesaro rimasta celebre. Malgrado una salute cagionevole fin dalla giovinezza e un’angoscia perpetua dovuta al panico da esibizione, che furono le cause di numerosi spettacoli annullati, Montserrat Caballé ha compiuto una delle più belle carriere del XX secolo. La ritroviamo intatta su disco, con piccoli miracoli come nell’incisione di Turandot sotto la direzione di Zubin Mehta, dov’è una Liu estremamente fragile e commovente. Norma ovviamente, ma anche questa Giovanna d’Arco, opera poco nota di Verdi, sotto la direzione elettrica di James Levine. Il soprannome di “Regina del belcanto”, quindi, non è affatto immeritato. © François Hudry
