Sunroof

Sunroof is the long-running but elusive collaboration between producer/engineer Gareth Jones and Mute Records founder Daniel Miller. Together, they make spacy abstractions informed by Krautrock, synth pop, and early electronic music. The duo have mainly used the project name for remixes and covers of material by artists such as Can, Neu!, and To Rococo Rot, dating back to the 1990s. Sunroof's first release of original material, Electronic Music Improvisations, Vol. 1, arrived in 2021, and Vol. 2 followed in 2023. British producers Gareth Jones and Daniel Miller have been steady collaborators since the early 1980s, when the two worked on Depeche Mode's third album, Construction Time Again. Together, the duo additionally mixed or co-produced material by other seminal Mute acts such as Erasure, Nitzer Ebb, and Fad Gadget. They also covertly worked on collaborative studio experiments, and eventually established Sunroof as a remix project. Reworks of material by acts including Can, Pizzicato Five, Kreidler, and Goldfrapp appeared on remix albums and singles starting in 1997, and a cover of "Hero" appeared on the 1998 tribute album A Homage to Neu! The project appeared to be put to rest after the mid-2000s, but Miller and Jones began recording spontaneous, unrehearsed sessions with modular synthesizers in 2019. Sunroof's first album, Electronic Music Improvisations, Vol. 1, was released by Mute in 2021. Vol. 2 came together in a matter of months, and was released in 2023.
