Kimberose
Born to an English father and a Ghanaian mother, vocalist Kimberly Rose Kitson Mills spent her childhood in the London suburbs before relocating to Paris, where she appeared on the French TV show Nouvelle Star in 2013 and formed her own band, Kimberose, two years later. As a Nouvelle Star contestant, Mills had performed songs that demonstrated the diverse range of her influences, including Des'ree's "You Gotta Be" and Pink Martini's Victoires de la Musique-nominated "Sympathique." Kimberose rooted its own sound in a similar mix of soul, pop, funk, and jazz, balancing Mills' powerful voice with musical contributions from guitarist Anthony Hadjadj, pianist Alexandre Delange, bassist Paul Herry-Pasmanian, and drummer Fred Drouillard. The band scored a Top 40 hit in France with "I'm Sorry," a track from Kimberose's 2017 EP, It's Probably Me. Shortly thereafter, Kimberose began working with producer Fred Jaillard on a full-length debut album, Chapter One, which was released in 2018. Filled with a mix of modern originals and classic covers, the album was a critical success, with Mills' vocal performances earning comparisons to Adele, Amy Winehouse, and Billie Holiday. After releasing the singles "Back on My Feet" and "Weak and Ok," the band returned in 2021 with a second album, Out.
