Blu DeTiger
Singer and bassist Blu DeTiger makes arty funk- and disco-influenced indie pop. She first garnered buzz in 2017 playing funky bass during her DJ sets before releasing her own tracks, including 2020's "Figure It Out" and "Cotton Candy Lemonade." Both songs appeared on her 2021 EP, How Did We Get Here?, which preceded additional singles like 2022's "Hot Crush Lover." She brought her melodic, electro-funk style to fruition on her 2024 full-length debut, album, All I Ever Want Is Everything.
A native of Manhattan, DeTiger grew up in a creative family the daughter of sculpture and painter Jonny Detiger. She started playing bass at age seven and grew up taking rock and jazz theory lessons. By her teens, she was drawing inspiration from classic funk outfits like Cameo, Prince, and Zapp, and was mentored by esteemed players like Jerry Barnes (Nile Rodgers and Chic) and Steven Wolf (Alicia Keys, P!NK). She began DJing around New York and quickly gained a hip reputation for her ability to spin records while adding her own funky bass grooves to the mix. Musicians took notice and she eventually hit the road, touring with artists like Caroline Polachek, Kitten, and the Knocks.
Along the way, DeTiger started turning heads with her own music, releasing tracks like 2019's "In My Head." The following year, she earned yet more Internet fame when a video of her playing bass to Meghan Thee Stallion's "Savage" went viral. Around the same time, she released another original track with the laid-back "Figure It Out." In October 2020, the single "Cotton Candy Lemonade" appeared. Both songs were included on her debut EP, How Did We Get Here?, which arrived in March 2021. She appeared on the cover of Bass Player magazine, which declared her the "future of bass." After signing to Capitol Records, she released the single "Blondes," followed by "Hot Crush Lover" in 2022. In 2024, DeTiger delivered her full-length debut album, All I Ever Want Is Everything. Along with songwriting collaborations with Uffie, Chappell Roan, Mayer Hawthorne, and others, it also included guest appearances by Mallrat on "Cut Me Down" and Magdalena Bay on "Disappearing."
