The Best of the Dreamlovers: The Heritage Years Plus features the Dreamlovers' Heritage sides from around 1961 and later releases on Swan and other labels. The Philly crooners are money for two bar bets -- almost sure winners each: What group sang behind Chubby Checker on "The Twist"? And who originally recorded "When We Get Married"? "The Dreamlovers" is the answer to both questions. They employed swooning harmonies on slowies mostly written by member Don Hogan, but they also recorded plenty of outside material by the likes of Jerry Ross, Joe Renzetti, Kenny Gamble, and others. The group that most inspired the Intruders glistens on "I'm Thru With You," a dose of sweet doo wop sugar, the ultra romantic "When We Get Married," and up-tempo numbers like "Amazons and Coyotes," "Pretty Little Girl," and "Zoom Zoom Zoom," which are as riveting as any early R&B/rock & roll you'll find anywhere. A quintet with five good voices, the Dreamlovers utilized them all, albeit mostly in the background. A high tenor floats behind the lead, the bass has an uncontainable bubbling persona, and with another tenor and a baritone they create delicious harmonies behind Hogan's leads. Very similar to the Heartbeats (later Shep & the Limelites), only the Dreamlovers loved singing beaters as much as they did sentimental ballads.
