Con il suo secondo album My Everything, Ariana Grande si era aggiudicata tutte le ricompense nel 2014. Quattro anni dopo e dall’alto dei suoi 25 anni, sembra più a suo agio su Sweetener, un album pop dalle trame molteplici. La ragazza che aveva tendenza a perdersi in slanci lirici strappalacrime ha saputo trovare un nuovo percorso nel quale espone il suo carattere forte. Dietro quel viso angelico si nasconde piuttosto un temibile predatore, in grado di avventurarsi in paesaggi pericolosi. In duetto con Pharell Williams su un pezzo un po’ retrò degli anni ̔90 (Blazed), non sembra lasciarsi impressionare.
Ariana Grande sa come farsi strada perfino di fronte alla regina Nicki Minaj, che la mette alla prova nei passaggi hip-hop, nei quali eccelle (The Light Is Coming). Con REM e God Is a Woman, non ci sono più dubbi. La giovane cantante rompe le frontiere e allarga il suo campo musicale fino ad incarnare un dio femminile. Ma ciò che rende assolutamente affascinante Ariana Grande, è prima di tutto la facilità e l’umiltà con le quali si serve delle sue diverse sfacettature. Kitsch o romantico, intenso e divertente, Sweetener è senz’altro l’album che le assomiglia di più, grazie alla sua fantasia ma anche per il fatto che su una quindicina di brani, dieci sono stati composti proprio da lei.
