Tiny Ruins
Parts delicate singer/songwriter folk, adventurous indie pop, and hazier psychedelic and dream pop, Tiny Ruins' insightful indie folk is the creation of New Zealand's Hollie Fullbrook. The project's debut LP, 2011's Some Were Meant for Sea, was essentially a solo outing, but while also spare, the 2014 follow-up, Brightly Painted One, established a backing trio that stayed in place through albums that crested with lush, full-band arrangements, like 2019's Olympic Girls and 2023's Ceremony.
The Tiny Ruins moniker was first adopted by Fullbrook in 2009 for her solo project, which made its recording debut in 2010 in the form of a collaborative EP with Spanish folk artist A Singer of Songs called Little Notes. When Tiny Ruins' debut album, Some Were Meant for Sea, followed on Spunk Records and Woo Me in May 2011, it was with notably minimalist, haunting songs with roots in classic British folk and American blues. The LP was well-received critically and led to tours with established indie acts like Calexico, Beach House, and Fleet Foxes in the U.S., Europe, and Australia.
After integrating bassist Cass Basil, drummer Alexander Freer, and electric guitarist/producer Tom Healy into the band, Tiny Ruins set about recording a follow-up LP in their hometown of Auckland. A six-song collection of older demos and rarities titled Haunts appeared in April 2013. Building on their minimalist sound, the subtle addition of horns, strings, and organ populated the songs on Tiny Ruins' second album, 2014's Brightly Painted One, which marked their debut for the Bella Union label. Another collaborative EP, this one featuring just Fullbrook with Hamish Kilgour, Hurtling Through (Spunk/Bella Union/Flying Nun), came out in late 2014. Aside from a 7" called "Dream Wave" that was co-released by the same three labels in mid-2016, and appearances by Fullbrook on Neil Finn's 2017 full-length, Out of Silence, Tiny Ruins mostly occupied themselves with touring until they eventually headed to Paquin Studios in Auckland to record their third studio album. They emerged with Olympic Girls, an equally graceful but more adventuresome, lushly arranged album produced by Healy and released in February 2019 by Courtney Barnett's Milk! Records and in the U.S. by Ba Da Bing!
In mid-2020, Fullbrook was featured on the Phoenix Foundation single "Tranquility." After being fleshed out from a set of loss-inspired solo acoustic demos provided by Fullbrook, another intricately arranged full-band effort, Ceremony, arrived on Ba Da Bing!/Marathon in April 2023.
