Sebbene High School Musical abbia una sorprendente dose di personalità, come pure i brani che davano l'impressione di poter essere comparsi in un liceo musical, il suo appariscente seguito assomiglia maggiormente a High School Musical: The Ride. Lo spostamento verso un pop più convenzionale in realtà non sorprende, considerato che la maggior parte delle star di High School Musical ha lanciato album solisti, incluso quello di Ashley Tisdale, il cui "Fabulous," è un esempio di diva fantastica pop. "I Don't Dance" e "You Are the Music in Me" appaiono funky e giovani mentre accennano un saluto alle tradizioni della show tune. Sebbene patisca in qualche misura la malattia del "seguito", High School Musical 2 è brillante e vigorosa, e i ragazzi potrebbero non accorgersi che non è del tutto fresca come l'originale.
