Massimo Giuseppe Bianchi

Pianist Massimo Giuseppe Bianchi performs virtuoso piano repertory but is also an accomplished chamber music player. In addition, he is a noted jazz performer. Bianchi studied at a conservatory and then went on for further work with pianist and contemporary music advocate Bruno Canino. He also took chamber music performance instruction with cellist Franco Rossi, pianist Maureen Jones, the Trio di Trieste, and the Trio di Milano. In addition, Bianchi studied composition with Vittorio Fellegara and Bruno Zanolini and attended a master class of György Ligeti. As a solo pianist, he has specialized in virtuoso repertory and in lesser-known works; his debut recording came in 2010 on the Naxos label with the first in a multi-volume series of releases devoted to composer Giorgio Federico Ghedini (1892-1965). Bianchi has appeared as a soloist with the Accademia Filarmonica Romana. He has performed at such Italian institutions as the Amici della Musica in Campobasso and the Associazione di Musica Lucchese in Lucca. He has been popular at Italian festivals such as the Settembre Musica in Turin, and he has often been heard on Italian radio, appearing on RAI Radio2 in the Italian region of Switzerland and several times on Italy's national RAI Radio 3 on the program Uomini e Profeti ("Men and Prophets") with a series he created called Il sunono del'Ineffabile ("The Sound of the Ineffable"). Bianchi has performed landmarks of virtuoso piano repertory from Bach's Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, to the Piano Sonata of composer Jean Barraqué. He is perhaps best known as a collaborative pianist, working with a long and varied list of artists that includes violinist Francesca Dego, the Mantua Chamber Orchestra, and pianist Jack Liebeck. His jazz credits include work with pianist Enrico Pieranunzi, with whom he has often played duo piano concerts, clarinetist Louis Sclavis, and cellist-bassist Paolo Damiani. Bianchi has continued to record for Naxos, mostly in chamber music; in the mid-2010s, he recorded Respighi's complete works for violin and piano with violinist Emy Bernecoli. He has also recorded for CPO, and on that label, he was heard in 2023 in a performance of Bruno Walter's Piano Quintet with the Aron Quartett.
