Understanding what this album is about requires consulting the booklet notes, which are excellent despite the misspelling of the word "cachet." The Saxon Alternative (or sächsische Variante) was not Telemann himself, but the inclusion of horns in a wind ensemble, thus making up the nucleus of the wind section of a modern symphony orchestra. The "wind band" referred to is not a wind band in the modern sense, but simply a wind chamber ensemble, which does indeed contain horns in three of the five pieces here. British group Syrinx specializes in early wind music, and they very nicely re-create a milieu in which Telemann's cutting-edge quality comes through. It's not just a question of the horns, but also of Telemann's witty take on the French suite style, with dance movements mixed in with some extremely witty character pieces (check out Le Someile, track 24, "The Snorer"). Syrinx uses some unusual period instruments, including not only natural horns, but the taille, a tenor oboe, and other Baroque winds. The blends are sharp and fresh, and the entire set hangs together even in music that might seem ordinary in lesser hands. Only the church sound, which puts a chill on warm, humorous music, disappoints. A superior Telemann release.
