Le premier album du quatuor féminin Warpaint fait suite à un EP à peine remarqué, Exquisite Corpse, produit par John Frusciante en 2008.
Fruit d'influences multiples allant du psychédélisme au post-punk tendance gothique (quelque part entre la nébuleuse This Mortal Coil et The Cure), The Fool présente neuf morceaux baignant dans une atmosphère ouatée, servis par des voix entourées d'écho.
La production de Tom Biller et le mixage d'Andrew Weatherall et Adam Samuels entre pour moitié dans l'identité de Warpaint, dont les chansons « Set Your Arms Down », « Majesty » ou « Composure » (la plus originale du lot) rappellent aux bons souvenirs de l'époque du shoegaze anglais et, plus loin, du courant batcave.
Derrière l'originalité de façade (girl-group au son bien démarqué), Warpaint manque encore de chansons consistantes, malgré quelques touches brillantes, pour emmener l'auditeur sans résistance dans son univers.
