Au rayon des héros injustement oubliés de l’histoire du jazz, Herbie Nichols occupe une place de choix. Ce virtuose emporté par une leucémie à seulement 44 ans restera comme un pianiste novateur, signant des canevas mélodiques mais aussi rythmiques très originaux pour leur époque. Fasciné par Thelonious Monk, il trouvera sa propre sémantique pianistique en mêlant des influences aussi disparates que celles du Dixieland, de la musique caribéenne mais surtout de compositeurs classiques comme Bartók ou Satie. Son passage chez Blue Note se matérialisera par trois albums en trio : The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vol. 1 et Vol. 2 (enregistrés en mai 1955 avec Al McKibbon à la contrebasse et Art Blakey à la batterie) et Herbie Nichols Trio (enregistré en août 1955 et avril 1956 avec Teddy Kotick et Al McKibbon à la contrebasse et Max Roach à la batterie). Ce coffret réunit toute cette somme avec en prime de nombreuses alternative takes. Les improvisations, comme les échanges avec ses différentes rythmiques mais aussi la teneur de ses compositions personnelles font de cette intégrale Blue Note la meilleure porte d’entrée à l’art d’un jazzman différent. En 1957, Herbie Nichols gravera son ultime disque pour Bethlehem Records, le tout aussi indispensable Love, Gloom, Cash, Love avec George Duvivier à la contrebasse et Dannie Richmond à la batterie, avant de tomber dans l’oubli et d’être rongé par la maladie qui aura raison de lui en avril 1963… Par la suite, des musiciens essentiellement avant-gardistes comme Misha Mengelberg, Roswell Rudd ou Steve Lacy aideront à sa réhabilitation. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
