Les archives de Neil Young sont une malle au trésor sans fond. Le Loner exhume ici une pépite de 1976. Cette année-là, il est en tournée électrique avec son groupe Crazy Horse mais aussi acoustique, en solo. Sans oublier quelques shows avec Stephen Stills avec lequel il a publié l’album Long May You Run en septembre… Songs for Judy se concentre sur ses performances acoustiques en solitaire qu’il a données tout au long du mois de novembre. Une vingtaine de titres enregistrés à Boston, Atlanta, Boulder, Fort Worth, Houston, Madison, Chicago et New York. Majoritairement ses tubesques classiques (Heart of Gold, After the Gold Rush, The Needle and the Damage Done) mais aussi quelques raretés (No One Seems to Know). Neil Young surfe alors sur une impressionnante vague créative. En deux ans, il a aligné trois chefs-d’œuvre : On the Beach, Tonight's the Night et Zuma. La teneur de ses compositions est impressionnante et les versions qu’il en donne ici, juste muni d’une guitare, un piano, un orgue et un harmonica, des sans-fautes à écouter en boucle.
