Encore inconnue outre-Atlantique, Adia Victoria sort sans bruit son second album, Silences, déjà plébiscité sur le sol américain. Au-delà de ce piètre jeu de mots, Silences reprend le titre d'un ouvrage de la féministe Tillie Olsen. Installée à Nashville, la chanteuse-compositrice-interprète et poétesse de 32 ans avait sorti son premier opus en 2016, Beyond the Bloodhounds, déjà en référence à la militante afro-américaine Harriet Jacobs. Une femme de conviction donc, que cette Adia Victoria.
Avec sa voix velours tout terrain qui reprenait même le Laisse tomber les filles de France Gall (How It Feels, 2017) , Victoria ravage 12 pistes fignolées avec Aaron Dessner des Nationals. Plus étoffé, rassemblant saxophone, guitare, bois et électronique, Silences s'écoute comme un combat contre ses démons. C'est en ce sens, celui du blues de l'intime, qu'elle entend sa musique et non comme de la pop indie, comme on pourrait facilement l'appréhender. "Je voulais remettre les crocs dans le blues.
