Recording the piano trios of Franz Schubert is a noteworthy occasion for any accomplished chamber group, but it seems to be a particularly auspicious event for the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, who mark 35 years of performing together with this 2012 Bridge release. These exquisite works are usually ranked at the pinnacle of the genre, especially the late Trios D. 898 and D. 929, which date from 1828, Schubert's last year. Included with these masterpieces are the single-movement Trio D. 28, the Notturno, D. 897, and the late "Arpeggione" Sonata, D. 821, which flesh out the program with compatible works of complementary character. Pianist Joseph Kalichstein, violinist Jaime Laredo, and cellist Sharon Robinson play with an ease and familiarity that give the music a highly intimate feeling, letting these pieces resonate with honest emotion and spontaneity. Yet this effortlessness is no doubt the result of much practice and artistic control, and the exchange of expressions is as artful as it is authentic. The three musicians play together in all works except the "Arpeggione" Sonata, where Robinson and Kalichstein engage in a dialogue that flows naturally with smoothness and depth.
