Comme une suite à son Alphabet paru en 2012, Mechanics rappelle comment Sylvain Rifflet est un fascinant empêcheur de tourner en rond. Epaulé par le percussionniste Benjamin Flament, le guitariste Philippe Gordiani et le flûtiste Joce Mienniel, Rifflet donne quelques indices (à moins qu’il ne force notre imagination) en laissant le dessinateur belge François Schuiten illustrer la pochette de l’album. Mais derrière les formes et les rouages intrigants et futuristes sur lesquels un homme, de dos, semble perdu (du pur Schuiten !), le saxophoniste et clarinettiste signe un disque totalement humain. Un alliage de compositions organiques pensées et jouées en groupe. Les ombres de Michel Portal (avec qui il a joué) voire du John Surman des débuts planent ça-et-là mais sans jamais dissoudre la personnalité musicale de Rifflet, ni édulcorer son style. Un style très ancré dans la narration et qui hypnotisera aisément le mélomane attentif. A l’arrivée, un grand disque de jazz contemporain sortant des sentiers battus. © MD/Qobuz
