American composer and pianist Scott Joplin's efforts were primarily responsible for developing the syncopated music known as ragtime and elevating it from the status of barroom and bordello entertainment to a legitimate musical genre, earning him the title "King of Ragtime." Works such as "Maple Leaf Rag" and "The Entertainer" earned him popularity and fame and, in the process, ragtime came to be a highly regarded form even influencing composers such as Claude Debussy and Charles Ives.
Joplin's music is interpreted here by E. Power Biggs, whose reputation was made as an organist and exponent of the music of the Baroque masters. His background serves him well as he eloquently articulates the syncopation, cross-accents, and contrapuntal movement of Joplin's music, particularly in piquant accounts of "The Easy Winners," "Peacherine Rag," and "Elite Syncopations." He imbues the works with rhythmic vitality and his use of a pedal harpsichord lends the music a rollicking, percussive quality.
