French composer Hyacinthe Jadin was one of the first musicians to make his reputation, and a living, in post-revolutionary France. As fate would have it, it would not be a long career, and after his early death, Jadin slipped into obscurity so rapidly that not even a single portrait of him was saved. While we may not know what he looked like, the 30 or so works that survive from his pen speak eloquently both for Jadin and the turbulent era in which he lived. Although a number of players over the years have recorded selections from Jadin's surviving output of 16 piano sonatas, pianist Richard Fuller appears to be the first to approach them in a comprehensive way in his three-disc set for Palatine, Hyacinth Jadin: Complete Sonatas.
The instrument of choice here is a fortepiano built by Beethoven's piano maker Nannette Striecher in 1814, restored just in time for use in this recording, made in a Dominican Cloister in Retz, Lower Austria. The sound of the cloister is reverberant, but it seems to match the resonance of the instrument itself, and rather than making the sound of the fortepiano unnaturally distant, it is realistic, warm, and extremely pleasant to listen to. Fuller, with the help of musicologist Heinz Anderle, had prepared the performing editions of these works himself and plays them expertly well. Distributed by Eroica, Hyacinth Jadin: Complete Sonatas is neither cheap nor particularly easy to find, but fanciers of Stürm und Drang and fortepianos will want to know that it is out there to be had. With well-prepared booklet notes, including a useful and well-written background essay by Anderle, and its generous running time of more than 200 minutes, Hyacinth Jadin: Complete Sonatas is well worth the money.
