Nommez au moins un ouvrage lyrique qui se déroule – partiellement – en Libye ! Mais si, il s’en trouve au moins un : Giuditta de Franz Léhar. Ce n’est pas à proprement parler une opérette, pas non plus un opéra, mais si le compositeur l’a lui-même considéré comme une « comédie musicale », cela ressemble fort à un opéra, si ce n’est qu’il s’y trouve quelques dialogues. C’est là l’ultime œuvre de Léhar, écrite en 1934 ; comme toujours chez le compositeur, on y découvre un surcroît de mélodies mémorables, parfois à la limite de la « scie », mais quelle brillante scie ! Quant à l’orchestration, elle évoque très furieusement Puccini ; les accents orientalisants des scènes qui se déroulent en Libye débordent d’imagination et si un musicien libyen n’y reconnaîtrait sans doute, il y a pourtant de quoi satisfaire les esprits les plus exigeants. Enregistrement réalisé avec la fine fleur des gosiers allemands et autrichiens d’aujourd’hui, des chanteurs appartenant aux troupes des grandes maisons d’opéra de la sphère germanique où l’on cultive encore les ouvrages un peu plus rares du répertoire, parmi lesquels Christiane Libor qui avait subjugué le public du Chatelet dans Les Fées de Wagner (2009). Quant au sujet, il pourrait évoquer une sorte de Carmen italiano-libyen, et si le héros ne tue pas l’héroïne à la fin, il l’abandonne quand même à son sort de cocotte entretenue pour lui-même s’évanouir dans le néant de sa déception.
