L’automobile, depuis Chuck Berry, a toujours été un moteur de l’inspiration des plus grands ; le Loner, Neil Young, ne déroge pas à cette règle induite avec son trente-cinquième album, inspiré par Lincvolt. Cet intitulé mystérieux est un projet aussi sérieux que le bonhomme, qui a consisté à transformer le moteur gourmand de sa Lincoln Continental de 1959 (un monstre, donc) en engin économe et soucieux de green attitude.
Énoncé comme ça, l’histoire pourrait faire sourire si on ne savait pas que Neil Young est : 1 - un vieil hippie utopiste comme on les aime, 2 – un animal borné qui ne fait que ce qu’il veut... Or ce projet écolo n’est pas qu’une lubie, il est le départ d’une sorte de croisade pour les énergies renouvelables, et il s’appuie sur une réalité (la voiture fonctionne), et un documentaire (sur un trajet à travers les USA). En 3, on pourrait insister que cette nouvelle passion lui a inspiré une grosse poignée de chansons bien ficelées, qui tournent aussi rond que le huit cylindres made in Detroit.
On pourrait soupçonner l’argument d’être mince, même s’il est en phase avec l’actualité (récession, plans de sauvetage Obamesques, faillite de l’industrie automobile américaine), mais l’album, sous ses aspects lo-fi (les photos de pochette faites par l’intéressé avec son mobile !) reste fondamentalement attachant. Le roboratif « When the World Collide » ouvre les hostilités, et annonce la couleur : guitares rugueuses, mélodies qui démarrent au quart de tour, et hymnes à la route qui sont un précipité d’americana bien sentie. Le boogie « Get Behind the Wheels » est certes convenu et on en voit la trame sous l’usure, mais « Fuel Line », ou « Just Singing a Song » finissent par coloniser le cerveau très vite. La ballade « Light a Candle », en déshabillé de steel guitar, est calibrée pour en remontrer à tous les néo folkeux du jour, qui y verront là la pure essence du truc.
Comme le Dylan contemporain (ces deux sexagénaires tout verts n’ont pas fini de se tirer la bourre sur l’autoroute du génie inoxydable), ce Neil Young là n’est pas un chef d’œuvre, mais il sait comment nous prendre : au charme, et au savoir-faire d’un artiste qui n’a plus rien à prouver que la durabilité de sa capacité de passion.
