Lorsque Duke Ellington enregistre ce live au Festival de Newport en 1956, la jeune garde l’a éloigné du devant de la scène. L’ère n’est plus du tout au big bands qui périclitent les uns après les autres. Le Duke n’a pourtant jamais lâché l’affaire, continuant même à entretenir sa phalange sur ses propres deniers, notamment grâce aux royalties de ses nombreuses compositions des années 20, 30 et 40. Pire : lorsque l’orchestre se produit à Newport, il n’a même plus de contrat discographique ! Cette soirée sera pourtant historique. La musique est d’un tel niveau, les solistes (Johnny Hodges, Clark Terry, Cat Anderson, Russell Procope…) sont d’une telle perfection que le public du festival s’emballe, monte sur les chaises et lorsque Paul Gonsalves prend son mythique solo sur Diminuendo And Crescendo In Blue, l’hystérie est totale ! Arrangements, écritures, solos, swing, rien ne manque à l’appel de ce chef d’œuvre. © MD/Qobuz
