Première entrée difficile dans le monde du rap pour un groupe résolument ancré dans le groove le plus pur, mais pas vraiment fixé entre le jazz et le rap. Du coup l’album a les qualités de ses défauts dans le sens où il est facile d’imaginer les Roots en train de jammer pendant des heures puis se rappeler qu’ils sont censés graver sur disque quelques unes de ces séquences anthologiques.
Ce qui donne des morceaux qui n’ont pas la construction sonore habituelle. Preuves avec les morceaux « ? Vs. Scratch » où Scratch mime à la bouche les suites percussives de Love, ou encore « The Lesson, Pt. I » première des épopées musicales dont on retrouvera la suite sur les autres albums, avec un Dice Raw d’à peine 15 ans qui détruit verbalement tout sur son passage. Ou bien « Distortion to Static » et son sample de gars qui rigole. Sans compter « Essaywhuman?!!!??! » très live et un Black Thought qui joue avec chaque membre du groupe et le public.
Des morceaux plus classiques sont également présents comme « Silent Treatment » qui traite des relations amoureuses sur le ton humoristique et se fera l’écho d’autres morceaux similaires à venir. Ursula Rucker termine l’album comme sur les prochains, avec un poème qui amène à la réflexion. Les fondations sont posées pour les pionniers du Hip-Hop jazz organique et cet album est parfois le préféré des fans du groupe car musicalement le plus proche du live.
Love commence dès cet album à détailler avec la minutie qui le caractérise la genèse de l’album, comme vous pouvez le lire dans la masse d’anecdotes contenues dans le livret de l’album.
