Dans l’histoire du rap, certaines questions restent insondables. Comme celle de savoir quel est le meilleur album des Roots. Ce qui est certain, c’est que leur premier, Do You Want More?!!!??! (1995), revient fréquemment dans la shortlist aux côté de Things Fall Apart (1999), Phrenology (2002) ou Game Theory (2006). Avec ses airs de jam rap-jazz, sa construction brute et économe, il est l’illustration parfaite du groove de la formation, une base autour de laquelle une discographie entière a été construite. Composée essentiellement de remixs de la tracklist d’origine déjà publiés, cette savoureuse réédition deluxe* laisse entrevoir la manière dont les Roots, tout en cultivant sa singularité, savait être profondément ancré dans le son new-yorkais de son époque. Les versions de Proceed remixé par A.J. Shine ou celle de Silent Treatment par Kelo ajoutent des samples classiques de l’époque, un côté définitivement old school, tout en respectant l’intouchable batterie de Questlove, seul élément jamais travesti. Passionnant également d’entendre une autre version de Distortion To Static en freestyle et refrains scratchés, ou les nouveaux couplets et ad libs placés sur Lazy Afternoon. * Cette édition de luxe, qui devait sortir le 12 mars, sera disponible le 25 juin. Elle est tirée des enregistrements originaux et comprend dix-huit titres bonus organisés par Questlove : certains encore jamais publiés et d'autres restés indisponibles en numérique jusque-là. L'édition vinyle de luxe 3LP comprend cinq titres bonus : Proceed II Feat. Roy Ayers, Proceed III, Proceed IV (AJ Shine Mix), Proceed V (Beatminerz Mix), ainsi que cinq remixes de Silent Treatment. Alors que l'édition 4LP comprend tout ce qui précède ainsi que les huit pistes bonus supplémentaires : In Your Dreams Kid (I'm Every MC), The Ultimate (Original '94 Version), ...… (dot dot dot… on & on) , Pffat Time, Swept Away (Brouillon original), It's Coming, Lazy Afternoon (Version alternative)", et deux versions remixées de " Distortion To Static ".

Descriptif de l'album

Dans l’histoire du rap, certaines questions restent insondables. Comme celle de savoir quel est le meilleur album des Roots. Ce qui est certain, c’est que leur premier, Do You Want More?!!!??! (1995), revient fréquemment dans la shortlist aux côté de Things Fall Apart (1999), Phrenology (2002) ou Game Theory (2006). Avec ses airs de jam rap-jazz, sa construction brute et économe, il est l’illustration parfaite du groove de la formation, une base autour de laquelle une discographie entière a été construite. Composée essentiellement de remixs de la tracklist d’origine déjà publiés, cette savoureuse réédition deluxe* laisse entrevoir la manière dont les Roots, tout en cultivant sa singularité, savait être profondément ancré dans le son new-yorkais de son époque. Les versions de Proceed remixé par A.J. Shine ou celle de Silent Treatment par Kelo ajoutent des samples classiques de l’époque, un côté définitivement old school, tout en respectant l’intouchable batterie de Questlove, seul élément jamais travesti. Passionnant également d’entendre une autre version de Distortion To Static en freestyle et refrains scratchés, ou les nouveaux couplets et ad libs placés sur Lazy Afternoon. * Cette édition de luxe, qui devait sortir le 12 mars, sera disponible le 25 juin. Elle est tirée des enregistrements originaux et comprend dix-huit titres bonus organisés par Questlove : certains encore jamais publiés et d'autres restés indisponibles en numérique jusque-là. L'édition vinyle de luxe 3LP comprend cinq titres bonus : Proceed II Feat. Roy Ayers, Proceed III, Proceed IV (AJ Shine Mix), Proceed V (Beatminerz Mix), ainsi que cinq remixes de Silent Treatment. Alors que l'édition 4LP comprend tout ce qui précède ainsi que les huit pistes bonus supplémentaires : In Your Dreams Kid (I'm Every MC), The Ultimate (Original '94 Version), ...… (dot dot dot… on & on) , Pffat Time, Swept Away (Brouillon original), It's Coming, Lazy Afternoon (Version alternative)", et deux versions remixées de " Distortion To Static ".

Au milieu des 90’s, alors que le hip-hop vit son âge d’or, la soul entame aussi sa révolution. Avec Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Jill Scott et quelques autres, le genre retrouve la classe, la sobriété et le raffinement qui animaient les albums de Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield ou Roberta Flack. Après les années de règne du R&B sirupeux ultra-commercial, la nu soul, nettement plus underground, ravive la flame de la soul originelle, dans ses arrangements comme dans ses textes. Un mouvement bref mais hautement influent.

Formé, à l'approche de la quarantaine, par Killer Mike – un rappeur noir d'Atlanta proche d'OutKast, versé dans le street rap baraqué – et El-P, un b-boy blanc de Brooklyn devenu le parangon du rap expérimental, Run The Jewels aurait pu s'ajouter à la longue liste des castings ratés de l'histoire du hip-hop. À l'inverse, le duo est devenu une institution, qui ravit les foules et réveille les consciences. Alors que sort “RTJ4”, son album le plus politique et dévastateur, retour sur les trajectoires croisées d'El-P et Killer Mike.
