Les Roots arrivent à conserver un son proprement organique tout en puisant indéniablement dans des supports moins joués, entendez ici plus de samples et moins d’instrumentation live.
Le collectif maison Grand Negaz que l’on imagine dirigé d’une baguette de fer par un Love rarement en manque de riffs,est à l’origine de la majorité de l’œuvre, et le son est résolument plus sombre que sur les précédents. Mais l’ensemble est peut-être encore davantage représentatif de la volonté musicale du groupe. Il est donc logique également que s’y retrouvent de futures connivences soniques du groupe, comme Q-Tip, Common Sense, la voisine Bahamadia ou encore D’Angelo.
« Hypnotic » porte bien son nom et reflète les ambiances à venir les années suivantes pour cette vague de morceaux nu-soul dont J-Dilla se fera le fidèle porte drapeau sonore. « Concerto of the Desperado » claque comme une bande son de western épique et se révèle un parfait hymne. « Clones » diffuse des émotions rares sur une rythmique qui s’enflamme et se relaxe à foison, évoquant les rappeurs sans talent.
Ils arrivent à avoir leur premier tube avec l’appui vocal de Raphael Saadiq sur « What They Do », dénonciation de toutes les causes ayant amené à l’état désastreux du rap à l’époque, qui n’a pas vieilli d’une rime. Un fabuleux troisième album qui encapsule probablement le mieux l’univers musical pourtant toujours mouvant du groupe.
