Daniel Barenboim has distinguished himself by an exemplary career, including brilliant solo piano performances, chamber music collaborations with some of the world's greatest musicians, and, of course, a conducting legacy that has led him to the helm of many of the finest orchestras and opera companies, including the Chicago Symphony, the Orchestre de Paris, Staatskapelle Berlin, and La Scala. This five-disc collection on the WCJ label features some of Barenboim's performances made from as long ago as 1988 through two live recordings made in 2005.The liner notes bill this collection as a celebration of Barenboim at 65 and it would seem more fitting for all of these performances to be recent ones, which they are not for the most part. Still, the performances selected truly represent Barenboim's vision to totally unify the technical and musical aspects of music. They also showcase his extreme versatility through his intimate interpretations of Scriabin, Schumann, Wagner, Beethoven, and Mozart. The jewel of the collection, however, is the live recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony with the Chicago Symphony. Although not performing in the usual venue, which creates occasional ensemble difficulties, the precision and profundity that are achieved with this combination of orchestra and conductor simply cannot be improved upon.
