Un enregistrement bien connu et qui reste une référence absolue grâce à la puissante direction de Sir Colin Davis dont les affinités avec Berlioz ne sont plus à démontrer. Le grand chef-d'orchestre anglais a d'ailleurs réenregistré cette oeuvre monumentale en concert, avec un même bonheur à la fin de sa vie. Mais ici, il s'agit de l'enregistrement d'une soirée mémorable à Covent Garden et d'une première discographique absolue. Une version au souffle puissant, dominée par la Didon émouvante de Joséphine Veasey et l'Enée généreux et rude de Jon Vickers. FH
