Vitskär Süden

Vitskär Süden is a doomy, progressive, neo-psychedelic hard rock band from Los Angeles. A quartet, their lineup consists of bassist/vocalist Martin Garner and drummer Christopher Martin, and guitarists Julian Goldberger (also a working film director) and TJ Webber. Their dense, trippy, yet spacious nocturnal sound reveals influences from across the spectrum of classic rock and metal, from Black Sabbath-ian doom riffs to King Crimson-esque Mellotrons and sonic effects; from Hawkwind's glorious cosmic cacophony to Roger Waters' and early Pink Floyd's iconic brand of theatrical space rock. All experienced players and composers -- Garner and Martin have been working together for more than two decades -- they are indifferent to trends, scenes, etc. Their eponymous, self-released debut album appeared in 2020 to critical acclaim throughout the metal press in the U.S. and the rock journals in Europe. They didn't support it by touring, though. Instead, they hunkered down, rehearsed, and began to compose new material. Ripple Music signed them in 2021. In 2022 they teased the singles "Archdiocese of Worms" and "Shepherd's on the Roadside" before releasing the internationally acclaimed dark fantasy concept album The Faceless King in November 2022. The album wove an origin story from the record’s antihero namesake, whose many rebirths and incessant hunger for power (earthly and cosmic) reflect the undertones of horror in their debut, while leaning further into fantasy to indulge actual world-building (normally a technique used in fiction), employing and expanding the mythology and shadowy presences on their debut. The Faceless King was recorded and co-produced by Vitskär Süden and Don Cento at Studio 64 in Los Angeles. It was mixed by Cento and mastered by James Driscoll. The vinyl edition came with a bonus 24-page Dungeons and Dragons module compatible with the fifth edition of the legendary fantasy role-playing game as a way of further articulating their album's concept. In the studio in October 2023, Garner began laying out the bass part in Rod Temperton's Michael Jackson smash "Thriller." His bandmates originally thought he was just jamming to compose a song, but what he was playing soon became apparent. They liked it so much they cut it the same day and released their tripped-out, dark, doomy cover of the track as a single to Bandcamp in time for Halloween.
