Tyler Ramsey

An earthy, poetic singer/songwriter from North Carolina, Tyler Ramsey has built a rich catalog rooted in folk and melodic indie rock. Although he began his solo career in the early 2000s, he became more widely known in the latter part of the decade for his work with Band of Horses, serving as their lead guitarist until 2017. During that time, he continued to make music on his own, releasing career highlights like 2011's The Valley Wind. Ramsey struck back out on his own and released 2019's rustic-toned For the Morning. He then worked with producer Phil Ek to make 2024's more rock-driven New Lost Ages. A gifted multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Ramsey began refining his sound while living in the western mountainous region of North Carolina, where he studied local styles of folk music and drew inspiration from the country-blues musicians who used to travel through the area. He independently released his eponymous debut LP in 2004. His willingness to collaborate with other musicians led to a lucky break when his friend Bill Reynolds, bassist for Band of Horses, invited him to visit the band in South Carolina. After striking up a friendship with lead singer Ben Bridwell, Ramsey accepted an invitation to not only open for Band of Horses on their fall tour, but to join the group as lead guitarist. Despite this busy schedule, he still found time to write and record his own material. Ramsey's second album, A Long Dream About Swimming Across the Sea, was released in January 2008 by Echo Mountain Records. Meanwhile, he contributed heavily to Band of Horses' Grammy-nominated album Infinite Arms (2010), as well as Mirage Rock (2012) and Why Are You OK (2016), each of which included Ramsey originals. In the midst of their busy schedule, he recorded his third solo record, The Valley Wind, for the Fat Possum label in 2011. In 2017, Ramsey announced his departure from Band of Horses and spent the following year writing and recording his fourth solo LP. The introspective and rootsy For the Morning was released by Fantasy Records in early 2019. During the five-year gap that followed, Ramsey reunited with former Band of Horses producer Phil Ek to work on his next album. Recording in Washington as a power trio with bassist Morgan Henderson (Fleet Foxes) and Sean Lane (Ann Wilson), his fifth album, 2024's New Lost Ages, was a more rock-centered release.
